Some churches read a complete gospel passion narrative as part of their Good Friday observance, but even this does not allow any close study of the text.  Devotional services at the cross can allow a more detailed reflection, but their purpose is more meditative. John provides a distinctive account of the passion of Jesus.  His account of the trial comes within a wider theme of the whole world being on trial before God's son.  The study day provides an opportunity to engage with the text at a deeper level.

Graham Cray is an Assistant Bishop in the Diocese of York.  Before retirement he was Fresh Expressions Bishop for the Archbishop of Canterbury, Bishop of Maidstone, Principal of Ridley Hall Theological College and Vicar of St Michael le Belfrey church in York.
